Q: How do you explain the classic Secret Wars t-shirts editing out or replacing X-Men and Fantastic Four characters?

If you don’t have the licensing rights to certain characters, you cannot sell merchandise depicting them.
This doesn’t make any sense to me. Last year I bought a Secret Wars t-shirt from Sears with the original Secret Wars #1 cover on it. You guys sold it then with all the characters. Did Marvel suddenly lose the right to sell merch of X-Men and Fantastic Four in the last year?
